The City
Detroit is known for its cars and music, and it was a major terminus for escaped slaves on the Underground Railroad. But in recent years it has become a city of great need. Ministries are eager to have additional laborers to expand their impact for Christ — in day camps, backyard Bible clubs, rescue missions, and evangelistic outreaches. For fun, you can watch a Tigers game, visit the Motown and Henry Ford Museums, or sample the delicacies in Greektown.

The Project
The purpose of Summer in the City is to develop your capacity to minister in the context of diversity through training and service in the inner city of Detroit. When you come on the project you will develop an understanding of God's heart for the city and the poor; you will work through the issue of racial reconciliation; you will be experiencing ministry in a cross-cultural context; and you will have many opportunities to work alongside and serve under ethnic leadership. You'll also gain some insight through intense teaching times with a local seminary professor on urban issues from a biblical perspective.
As a result of being on an "SITC" project you will learn valuable life-skill principles that you can transfer back to your campus or community; and the four-week experience will aid you in determining if God may be calling you into full-time Christian service.

The Ministry Sites:
Students will be broken up into pairs to serve at sites around the city that coincide with their personal area of interest or study. This summer's sites are to be announced...
The Training
The first ten days of the project is devoted to orientation to the city and urban ministry. Each day has a specific theme of cross-cultural ministry, racial reconciliation, evangelism, team building, wholistic ministry, etc.
During the rest of the project, an evening each week is set aside for on-going training in evangelism and discipleship which you can use to take back to your campus and community. You will also meet weekly in a small group for Bible study. There is an additional evening for you to have along with the Lord which we call J.A.M. (Jesus and Me).

The Fun
This summer, one day each week is set aside for you as students to experience Detroit. It is a free day (Friday). During our free time you can go cycling or fishing on Belle Island or catch the breeze off the Detroit River. Visit one of many historic museums in the city such as Motown Museum, African-American Museum, or the Detroit Historical Museum.
Also, down on the riverfront each weekend there are ethnic festivals, where there is plenty of good food, bands, and local wares to enjoy. Of course there are exciting Detroit Tigers' Games at Comerica Park waiting for you. You will have a blast in Motown with students on the project from the west coast, east coast, and the south.
